There is going to be an unprecedented
level of change in the US higher education system within the next
couple of years, said Sara Davis, the chief lobbyist for Nelnet.
In the educational program, “An
Education That Works” that airs every Tuesday on KWAM990, the host
Kenneth Kinney from Victory University had Sara Davis as the recent
guest. Sara spoke about the US higher education system and the role
of Congress.
US Higher Education System – A
Political Issue
Sara threw some light on the US higher
education system where she explained that since the establishment of
the Higher Education Act in the year 1965, the Congress has met for
every five years to take vital decisions on the opportunities
available for the students. Few years later, the prospects of the
system started gaining more importance in the meetings, she added.
Davis also said that the course of
these actions has actually led the system to become a political
issue. To be precise, during the early 90’s a scenario of political
fight started evolving between different sectors of the higher
education system. For example, competition among ‘the private
sector’ with ‘the evolution of banking system’, ‘career
colleges’ with ‘educational services to non-traditional
students’, etc.
Sara further added more
information about the influence of the Affordable Care Act that was
passed in the year 2010. She said that the Act influenced the
elimination of the private sector banking system. Since then, the
funds are solely obtained from the US Department of Education. This
was due to the influence from the Obama care on the education system
of the US.
Role of Congress in the Change
Davis shared some thoughts on the
existing scenario of US college education. She said that the
middle-class people of the US have lost their faith in the
affordability of college education for their children. Even if the
students get the access to colleges, at the end of the course period,
they would end up with huge student loan debt. The most drastic
outcome could be ending up with degrees that are not relevant to
today’s economy.
The guest said that the Congress
needs to act upon these issues, to solve the real problems of the
people of the US. Relevant laws need to be passed to change the
entire higher education system, in a positive way. The laws should
enable students to take up courses that are more skill based which
lead them to contribute to the economy of the nation.
