Networking Can Help You Get a Job!!!

Dear Readers. We wish you all a very Happy New Year. We thank you for the great support you have shown us last year. This year, there is more information for you to look forward to. Information about Victory University and its services towards education and society through various ways including shows like ‘An Education That Works’.
Last week’s KWAM 990 radio show ‘An Education That Works’ brought us a lot to learn about education and career.
Establish contacts, get to know about ‘the’ people and do your homework diligently, if you are looking for a job or career transition. This was the message from the guests, Winston Howard and Bob Reilly on the radio show ‘An Education That Works’ hosted by Kenneth Kinney of Victory University on KWAM AM990.
Winston Howard is Victory University's coordinator of career services and Bob Reilly is a career transition specialist. Kenneth discussed with the guests about the subjects focusing on networking, internships and the role of community service in the job market.

One of the guests, Bob Reilly, a career transition specialist provided insights on networking, which is establishing contacts. Networking as a process is done by the Bob Reilly Group by forming career transition groups where individuals come together to share ideas, information and contacts with the people in need to find a job or to change a career.
Also, the University’s coordinator of career services, Winston Howard stressed on the importance of internships for a student to establish vital contacts during the course period and to land a job at the end of the course.

Here are some of the useful inputs shared by the guests.

Role of Networking in Job Search and Career transition
Networking plays an important role and provides an edge to a student or an experienced candidate alike in today’s competitive job market scenario to find jobs and to change career paths.

Networking enables a potential candidate to establish contacts with influential people who would be able to provide an opportunity for the candidate in future.

Networking opportunities through Internship
When a student graduates from the college, he or she is expected to have some experience to be placed in a job. Recruiting companies also give priority to such candidates over a complete fresher who lacks vital hands-on experience in the job. Thus, a student with some internship experience definitely has an upper hand over others.

Along with a strong Resume, internships can help a student establish contacts through the company where he or she would have done the internship. The particular company can recommend the student to other companies for jobs based on the performance of the student during the internship period. Thus, along with a strong GPA, internship can also play a vital role to land a job.

Networking as Community Service
Community services including volunteering works can add value to a candidate’s resume. Networking is also considered as one of the community services in the job market. People who involve in networking can act as a career advisor and share important contacts and information with the people who are looking for jobs or career transitions.

People should realize that by performing such community services, they actually contribute to people who are in need to support their families. Networking services enable a person to join in the fight for other people. Networking, thus, can be considered as one of the philanthropic activities.

Networking as a Support Tool
Establishing contacts with the influential people in the industry is not good enough to get hired by a company. A potential candidate should write down a plan and follow it diligently. The plan should be based on the preparation, necessary to acquire a job. It can include weekly preparations covering different subjects in the job search such as preparing the strongest Resume, preparing for the interview, etc.
Candidates should be aware that without a proper plan and homework, getting hired is not easy.

The show host Kenneth also added his points saying that a college is not only a place to get a good education, it is where a student can make important connections with people to get a job offer after the completion of the course. He also reminded the listeners about the enrollment opportunities in the upcoming new semester starting at Victory University from January 06, 2013.
